Editor's Insight: Here is one of many instances where school districts are recognizing the support role that vending can play in improving students' nutrition.
The article reports that the district is interested in getting the StarFood machine from VE Global Solutions. The StarFood machine is one of several vending machines equipped with technology that can identify students, authorize transactions, dispense healthy meals, chart nutritional consumption, and compile audit data for compliance with subsidized and reimbursable meals programs.
The article doesn't say where the school district is applying for funds, but there are various governmental and non-profit agencies that provide such funds.
The StarFood and other systems being used by school systems was summarized in the April Automatic Merchandiser in a feature article by Michigan State University Prof. Michael Kasavana. To view the article click here. 07-27-07 by Elliot Maras
