Boyd's Coffee Launches 100% Compostable Coffee Pod, Features In Retail

March 14, 2017

PORTLAND, ORE. – March 13, 2017 – Boyd Coffee Company, the oldest family-owned coffee company in the Pacific Northwest, is proud to launch the first certifiable 100% compostable, single-serve coffee pod available in grocers throughout the West Coast. The soft pouch generates less waste than the leading portion packs, while delivering a fresh coffee aroma and flavor with full extraction.

“With our long-standing commitment to organic and Rainforest Alliance Certified™ coffees, Boyd’s Coffee has found an alternative solution to the billions of plastic cups filling landfills in our country,” said Jeffrey Newman, CEO of Boyd Coffee Company. “Our partner, Club Coffee, has manufactured a single-serve compostable pod that can be converted to useful compost in as little as a few weeks. As a fourth-generation Oregon company, we care deeply about our impact on the environment, and strive to find innovative ways to protect our planet.”

The popularity of single-serve coffee is apparent in office and home kitchens nationwide. According to Club Coffee, in 2014 almost 30 percent of U.S. consumers were drinking single-serve coffee, with U.S. single-serve retail coffee sales growing 319 percent between 2011 and 2015 to reach about $4.6 billion in revenue.

The new single-serve pod is made from more than 90-percent renewable resources, and the pod’s ring is made from coffee chaff  -- the skin of the coffee bean that comes off during the roasting process. Every single part of the pod is designed to be digestible by, and accessible for, bacteria, which supports the composting process after the coffee has been brewed and discarded. The pod meets the Biodegradable Products Institute standards and certifications required by municipal compost facilities. The compostable pod is compatible with most Keurig Green Mountain brewing systems, including the new Keurig 2.0 brewers.

Boyd’s new certified 100% Compostable Coffee Pods are available for grocers in a 12-count box with an SRP of $9.99 in the following blends and roasts:

  •        Good Morning – medium roast that is crisp, smooth and eye-opening.
  •        Coffee Shop – medium-light roast that smells like morning and tastes clean, crisp and satisfying.
  •        French No. 6® – dark roast with an intoxicating aroma, seductive and sweet.
  •        Hi-Rev® - medium-dark roast with a high caffeine level that equals hi-performance.
  •        Lost Lake Decaf Organic is a certified organic, Rainforest Alliance Certified™ medium-dark roast with a complex flavor and simple natural water decaffeination process.
  •        Red Wagon Organic Coffee is a certified organic, Rainforest Alliance Certified™ dark roast that is smoky and sweet with a smooth finish.

Without using a compostable pod, coffee consumers would have to separate their coffee single serves; opening them, composting the used grounds, cleaning and recycling the plastic cup, and disposing of the foil lid in the garbage. “Composting manufacturers have been losing coffee compost for the past few years due to the rise of plastic single-serve pods,” said Al Rattie, director of market development, US Composting Council. “The majority of these used pods go directly to landfills, creating a huge amount of waste, and depriving compost manufacturers of an important nutrient component. The creation of a fully compostable, fully certified pod is a critical development in achieving healthy soils and a sustainable society, and sets the standard for single-serve pods moving forward.”

About Boyd Coffee Company – www.boydscoffeestore.com

Boyd’s Coffee is one of the oldest family-owned coffee companies in the world. Founded in 1900 in Portland, Oregon, Boyd’s has a long, storied history of helping restaurants, hotels and convenience stores attract and keep customers by providing them with consistently excellent coffee, tea and other beverages.

At Boyd’s, we don’t believe that coffee bestows status or makes a statement about the person who drinks it. We believe that people are capable of making their own statements. We hold that coffee is fuel, not fashion. It is what it has always been: a reward for good work, done well; and a kick in the pants to get back out there and do some more. That’s the legacy of coffee in America and that’s the Boyd’s legacy, as well.
