Authorities have arrested a man they say closed the Sacaton rest area on I-10 in Arizona in order to burglarize the vending machines.
On Aug. 18, 2015, Arizona State Troopers received word from Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) that it was having some issues at rest stops, specifically the Sacaton rest area, where someone would set up cones to indicate the rest area was closed in order to vandalize and steal from the vending machines.
On Aug. 21, 2015, troopers received a call from a FBI agent who was driving past the Sacaton rest area and observed a suspicious individual placing traffic cones across the entrance to the rest area, the Department of Public Safety wrote in a press release. A State trooper supervisor who was in the area confirmed the agent’s report and the supervisor along with three troopers converged on the rest stop to investigate the suspicious activity. A white male matching the suspect description given by the FBI agent was located and after some questioning was arrested on outstanding warrants. The troopers noticed what appeared to be burglary tools inside the passenger compartment of the man’s vehicle.
The male subject was taken to a State Trooper office where an interview was conducted. The investigation remains ongoing and the subject has not been formally charged with the vandalism violation.
