Soda Tax On The Table For Alabama Lawmakers

June 24, 2015

Alabama legislators are discussing a soda tax as a remedy for general fund budget shortfalls, reports ABC 33/40. The potential soda tax would include a nickel increase onto every 12 ounces of soda. A soda tax, the source reports, is only one of many proposals being discussed.

Other states have proposed taxes on sodas and sugary beverages. In California, State Senator Bill Monning proposed a soda tax in 2013; however, it died in committee. Voters in Berkeley, CA, however, did pass a law taxing sugary beverages last year.
