Keys Are Easier To Duplicate Than Ever

May 4, 2015

Some Websites can take photos of a key and produce a duplicate, according to Bakersfield Now Eye Witness News. The sources interviewed a locksmith who recommended adding “Do Not Duplicate” to any key you have made. Reputable locksmiths and big box store key copiers won’t make a copy of a key that says Do Not Duplicate, however, there are unattended kiosks and Websites that don’t discriminate. Also, leaving keys unattended leaves them vulnerable. Reports for Bakersfield Now actually tried the Website with a house key and it worked perfectly.

Editor’s note: While this report covers house keys, the security concerns are the same for businesses that use standard keys. Train route drivers to keep keys on their person at all times and have keys stamped “Do Not Duplicate” to provide some protection.
