Blog: Is Diet Soda Falling By The Wayside?

March 27, 2015

Although sales of diet soda fell in the 1990s, they regained traction in the mid-2000s. Now, however, sales have fallen nearly 20 percent in the last five years. This time, it could be for good, the Washington Post suggests. Data research firm Euromonitor predicts that by 2019, diet soda sales will decrease by one-third since their 2009 peak.

Beverage companies continue to expand other low-calorie options. Coca-Cola Life™ —a reduced-calorie cola sweetened with cane sugar and stevia leaf extract—made its U.S. debut in November. PepsiCo announced in October that it would launch Pepsi True with 30 percent less sugar than regular Pepsi.
