Rhode Island State Senator Donna Nesselbush believes consumers have a right to know if they’re purchasing food with genetically modified ingredients. Nesselbush has therefore introduced a bill that would require any food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to disclose that fact on the label, according to the Associated Press.
The bill would go into effect in 2017.
Rhode Island joins other states in its GMO labeling efforts. Indiana State Senator Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn, introduced Senate Bill No. 60 in January, which seeks to require companies to label foods produced by genetic engineering.
