New Survey Finds One-In-Four Americans Uses Digital Technology To Replace Face-To-Face Communication

Oct. 16, 2014

WATERBURY, Vt.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- It's no secret digital technology is taking over our lives, and face time with friends and loved ones is decreasing because of it. The 2014 Keurig Coffee Connections Survey found that more than one-in-four Americans (26%) use social media, text or email to communicate sensitive information to friends or family when they could have talked to them in person. Even more people (30%) state that without social media, they would have a hard time keeping in touch with friends and loved ones at all. Despite this, Americans still consider being together in person a favorite way to stay in touch. In fact, if given the chance to have a coffee date with anyone, Americans would much rather connect with a long-lost loved one (64%) than the President (7%) or their favorite celebrity (6%).

Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (Keurig) (NASDAQ: GMCR) will put that theory to the test with the "Say Hello with Keurig® 2.0" campaign, which aims to bring people together over their favorite Keurig Brewed® beverages. Starting today and through November 8, 2014, people can go to HelloKeurig.com to enter for a chance to win a trip to New York City to reconnect with an old friend - or to connect over coffee with executive producer, actor and singer Donnie Wahlberg, Keurig's Say Hello ambassador.

"I have more than half a million Twitter followers, yet I've only met a handful of these people in person," says Wahlberg. "I am excited to be part of the 'Say Hello with Keurig 2.0' campaign because it gives people the chance to reconnect with a loved one in their life, or have the chance to meet me in person. People know how important family is to me, so I won't be offended if you pick a loved one over me!"

Keurig has launched the survey and "Say Hello with Keurig 2.0" campaign in celebration of the recent debut of the Keurig® 2.0 brewer, the company's most advanced hot brewing system yet and the first Keurig® brewer to brew both a single cup and a carafe of coffee. Plus, for every sweepstakes entry, Keurig will donate $1 (up to $20,000) to the United Services Organization (USO) to help support its highly valued programs that connect our troops with their families.

When it comes to being around family and friends, Americans said that being together in person is a favorite way to connect but additional survey results found that sometimes technology can get in the way of enjoying in-person experiences.

  • People are so attached to technology that nearly two-in-five (38%) will often take a call from someone else while spending time with a loved one, and nearly one-third will interrupt an in-person conversation to check email (31%), text someone (30%) or check their social media accounts (27%).
  • Despite all their digital connections, nearly one-third (30%) of adults admit they have not actually met more than half their social media connections in person.
  • One of the benefits to digital technology is that it gives people another way to stay connected. Nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans say it's easier to stay in touch with their closest friends and loved ones who don't live with them via social media, text or online than to meet up with them in person.

For more information and to enter the "Say Hello with Keurig® 2.0" sweepstakes, people can visit HelloKeurig.com. In addition to the grand prize, each week, five entrants will be chosen to win a new Keurig® 2.0 brewing system.

About Donnie Wahlberg

With an impressive background that spans the worlds of television, music and films, Boston native Donnie Wahlberg has captured the attention of audiences worldwide. He has proven his versatility by transforming himself from a teen music sensation to a noteworthy dramatic film actor, a critically acclaimed television star and an Emmy nominated producer.

Donnie's acting career launched from a pivotal role in "The Sixth Sense," which was originally written for a 13-year-old boy until Wahlberg met with M. Night Shyamalan to inquire about rights for a theater production and ended up convincing the writer/director that no one else but he could play the role. His film credits include roles in over 20 feature films. He has co-starred with Mel Gibson in "Ransom" directed by Ron Howard, and starred in the independent film, "Southie." Other film credits include the blockbuster hit, "Saw II," "Annapolis," "Righteous Kill" and "Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School."

Showing yet another dimension to his talents, Wahlberg co-wrote "What Doesn't Kill You," in which he also co-starred with Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke. Donnie's other television credits include the award-winning miniseries "Band of Brothers," "The Kill Point" series, co-starring with Harvey Keitel in the miniseries "Path to 9/11," as well as the drama series "Boomtown." In the world of unscripted television, Wahlberg is the executive producer of both the Emmy nominated show "Wahlburgers" and the critically acclaimed show "Boston's Finest" for TNT.

You can see him currently starring as 'Danny Reagan' opposite Tom Selleck, in the internationally acclaimed, top ranking hit drama, "Blue Bloods" on CBS, now heading to its fifth season.

In 2008, Wahlberg was instrumental in putting together the phenomenally received reunion of New Kids On The Block, which yielded a new number one pop album and sold out worldwide arena concert tours. When he is not acting, performing or producing television shows, you can find him in Boston hanging out with his family and friends.
