NAMA Files EPA Request For Comment Extension On Proposed Refrigeration Chemical Rule

Sept. 9, 2014

(CHICAGO) September 9, 2014 – NAMA filed a request Monday to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asking for an extension on the comment period for a proposed rule. This rule has the potential to alter the list of acceptable uses for refrigeration coolants used in new and retrofit vending machines and micro market coolers, according to Eric Dell, NAMA’s Senior Vice President of Government Affairs.

The request, filed in conjunction with several trade associations, asks for a 60-day extension on the comment period for the proposed rule: Change of Listing Status for Certain Substitutes Under the SNAP Program (Docket No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2014-0198).

If the rule goes into effect, several refrigeration chemicals and blends previously listed as acceptable alternatives to ozone-depleting substances, could now be considered unacceptable in certain circumstances, including in the use of vending and refreshment industry equipment.

“NAMA is working with industry machine manufacturers to assess the impact of the proposed regulations,” Dell said. “With the amount of pending, applicable regulations from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the EPA, it is essential that the comment period be extended to provide for the industry to adequately determine the impact and respond.”

“We specifically appreciate the opportunity to work with the North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers and the American Beverage Association on this effort,” Dell continued.

Founded in 1936, NAMA is the association representing the $42 billion U.S. vending and refreshment service industry.  With more than 1800 member companies – including many of the world’s most recognized brands – NAMA provides advocacy, education and research for its membership.
