AVT Takes Stance On Micro Markets

Aug. 14, 2014

CORONA, Calif., Aug. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- AVT, Inc. (OTC Markets: AVTC) (www.autoretail.com), a leader in automated retailing systems, commented today on an article published on the NAMA Website that raised the question: "What is a micro market?"

According to NAMA, "There seems to be an ongoing discussion of whether Micro Markets are classified as vending, convenience stores, or employee break rooms."

AVT believes that "micro markets" are taking the industry in the wrong direction. "There is too much shrinkage (theft of merchandise)," said James Winsor, CEO of AVT, Inc. "We hear reports every day from owners of micro markets that are losing money on these systems, because they are simply glorified self-service checkouts."

NAMA states, "A micro market is a self-checkout retail food establishment," they report. "In a micro market a customer picks up a product from an open rack display, a reach-in refrigerated cooler or freezer, then scans the UPC bar code at a payment kiosk. The customer pays with a single payment, be it cash, credit card or stored value card."

Winsor said that micro-markets leave owners exposed and vulnerable. "A micro-market suffers from a tremendous lack of control, theft, and possible contamination and tampering issues, he commented. "We encourage a business or entrepreneur to get all the facts before purchasing an expensive micro-market, and learn how an automated 'Micro-Store' with full reporting, security, and automated dispensing, may be a better solution."

AVT is a leader in the Micro-Store industry, and has a range of systems for a variety of applications. In addition to protecting the food from tampering and theft, they feature interactive touchscreen displays that engage customers and can upsell items to increase profits. "With our Micro-Stores, if someone buys a bag of chips, for example, the system will ask them if they would like to add a beverage to their order," Winsor stated. "The micro-markets can't do that, which in itself is about 20% in lost revenues."

"We believe the smart money is on Micro-Stores, not Micro-Markets," Winsor said. "It may just be a one-word difference, but it can mean a big difference in profits, accountability, risk and reward."
