NAMA Joins Beverage Industry In Raising Concerns Of Proposed Washington, D.C., Bottled Water Ban

May 23, 2014

(CHICAGO) May 22, 2014 – Today, NAMA announced that it has signed a letter raising industry concerns regarding the proposed Prohibition of Bottled Water Act of 2014 in Washington, D.C.

“As the D.C. city council begins its deliberations and discussions surrounding this impactful legislation, it is important for us to communicate our concerns so that the council fully understands the content of the legislation and its far-reaching impact on everyone from college students to many small business owners,” said Eric Dell, NAMA’s Senior Vice President of Government Affairs.

The proposed legislation would restrict the sale or distribution on District of Columbia government property of drinking water in plastic bottles of 21 ounces or less. It would also bar the use of District government funds to purchase bottled water.

“NAMA opposes the legislation because we believe it would be costly to charitable causes who raise funds through the sale of bottled water at festival and community events,” Dell said. “It would also leave DC employees, families and individuals with little or no choice of beverage options, as well as impact jobs within the vending industry,” Dell continued.

“Our goal is to raise issues of concern in hopes of working together for a common-sense solution that addresses litter and recycling concerns, not a ban on the sale of bottled water,” Dell said.

Founded in 1936, NAMA is the national association representing the $42 billion U.S. vending and refreshment services industry.  With more than 1800 member companies – including many of the world’s most recognized brands – NAMA provides advocacy, education and research for its membership.
