Sept. 23, 2013

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that an outbreak of coffee rust in Central America, southern Mexico, South America and the Caribbean will cause coffee production to decline by seven percent in that region this year, according to the U.S. Department of State. The U.S. is working with the International Financial Corporation (IFC) to provide farmers with medium and long term loans for renovations and improvements. In addition, a regional coordinator has been hired to provide regional emergency coordination and disseminate the best practices to combat rust. Full report.
