Calorie Disclosure Update: New Final Rule Projection

July 17, 2013

“We want to alert our members of new information related to calorie disclosure,” said Eric Dell, NAMA’s senior vice president of government affairs. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated its previous projection of final action from April 2013 to September 2013 for the calorie disclosure rules.

“While the setting of the final action deadline for the final calorie disclosure rules to September 2013 reflects the importance of this issue to the FDA, it’s important to recognize that this is only a projection, not a definitive date for issuance of the final rules,” Dell continued.  “We will continue to provide members with the latest information and guidance related to this significant issue.”

Background

The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) published the Spring 2013 update to the “Unified Agenda of Federal Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions” on July 3, 2013. The Unified Agenda, detailing the Obama Administration’s regulatory plans for the upcoming months, is a compilation of proposed and on-going federal agency rulemaking plans/activities. These plans include updates on pending regulations and anticipated deadlines. One of the listed items for final rulemaking is the FDA’s pending rule on Calorie Labeling of Articles of Food Sold in Vending Machines. Click here for further detail.
