Metro New York Railroad To Test Smartphone-Issued Bar Codes For Commuters

The Metro-North Railroad in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will begin a pilot program next month allowing commuters to buy tickets with their smartphones, according to Westport News in Stamford, Conn. After a ticket is purchased through the application, the time- and date-stamped electronic ticket shows up on the purchaser's smartphone screen as a secure image the conductor can validate visually or by scanning a barcode.
