Editor’s Insight: Whether he intended it or not, New York City Mayor Bloomberg has ignited a national debate on the government’s right to restrict consumer choice. This rally is a reaction to the debate which, in turn, will draw more attention to the debate.

It’s a healthy debate to have, no pun intended. Government at all levels has been saddled with higher health costs which get passed along to taxpayers and consumers. At the same time, the right to choose what products and services to buy has been a cornerstone of our nation’s founding principles.

Hopefully, lawmakers, with input from citizens and businesses, will come up with ways to address rising health care costs and at the same time protect long-held freedoms. 07-09-12 By Elliot Maras
