Feds Reject New York City Plan To Ban Food Stamps To Buy Soda

Federal officials rejected Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal to bar New York City’s food stamp users from buying soda and other sugary drinks with them, according to The New York Times.

Editor's Insight: This proposal was not only unfair in that it limits choices to (and stigmatizes) food stamp recipients. As noted by an Agriculture Department official, it also would create a logistical problem for retailers who would have to program their cash registers to flag certain products to deny food stamp purchases.
