Elliot:
Being that I am one of the key Architect's of the NAMA CoffeeShow 2010 I want to respond to all OCS operators regarding the $199 comment from and OCS operator. I too am disappointed that an individual would make a decision not to attend this event based only on $199. This is the largest and only major Coffee and Water event for OCS operators. This price includeds networking receptions,10 dynamic education sessions that you would pay hundreds of dollars alone for, a tabletop event where attendees can see products and services from 65+ vendors who will have "Bean Bucks" deals available (only good at this event) for the operators to take advantage of in order to make the event even a more tremendous value to attendees. Before anyone decides $199 stands in the way of attending the CoffeeShow 2010 I ask that operators go to the NAMA website, www.vending.org and click on the CoffeeShow icon and review the event or call me at the NAMA office. 312-346-0370 X262

elliott, (pls excuse my lack of spelling skills)

certainly never intended anything i share with you as an insult, personal or otherwise.

as from learning from others, that is how i continue to learn.

that being said i have 2 replies to your blog. one, i have never attended a "show" for the purpose of education. i generally attend shows to see and hold new products and make deals strong enough to pay for my trip to the show. key word being trade show.

the second reply is that i put myself above no one. hardly ever had probably never will. most of those that i learned the most from are unfortunately no longer with us.

with them no longer around, i have seen a lot less customer service, a lot more "selling" of the rainbow, and elliott, a lot more of going after what the other guy has.

my example of that is based on products that i can, and can not source here in southern california , but i can source from the same companies other facilities across the country. the reason, i am told, for this is that sales of xyz product here in the 10th largest ecomony in the world, is that sales for xyz are weak out here, but strong in the carolinas or the northwest.

go figure.

elliott, i believe what little success i have out here is due to the fact that yes, i continue to reinvent myself day in and day out...and i sit back and watch while other seem to go after the one football on the field instead of being creative.

i guess the good news is that they are still on the field, but they don't seem to want to get a skinned knee or a bruise of any kind. i bleed daily.

elliott, it is a very bizarre world when we seem to work with a series of reps from a series of companies that are micro managed from the bottom and up close to the top. no one in the "chain" seems to be allowed to make a decesion, yes or no or maybe. i question why they even bother, and the answer is that the job is needed.

you and i both know how much, and unfortunately not for the good, things have changed. we have so much more but in the end so much less.

elliott, since oct 30,1984 when i left the golf business and began what is now this company....i have never had a sales rep making calls for our company. maybe if i did i would be much larger than i am, but i am not so sure i would enjoy that as much as i enjoy what i currently do.

bottom line elliott, any insult would be directed toward nama, and not you.

we are all small business people no matter the size of our companies. we all pay the highest prices for the products that we buy for our customers. to this day, i do not see nama standing up in a fight for what is right and attempt at all to assist in making the playing field level.

just this week, i picked up coke all over town for $5.98. i pay close to $8 direct from coke. i picked up pepsi all over town for $4.98 and i pay close to $7 direct.

with that type of playing field i know that i am very fortunate to have a reputation of some sort where dr soda customers know me well enough to know that my pricing is a result of a the playing field and not personal greed.

when nama starts stepping up and being a leader that i feel that they can be, they will see me with bells on. but in the meantime, i still opt not to pay to attend a trade show. fyi, i did not attend the health food expo this year because they charged as well, but elliott, they had to do that to control the amount of people that attend that show.

again, elliott, there will never be a day when i express anything as a personal insult to you. it just ain't my style

Elliot,
Thanks for stepping up and speaking out on this issue. You are absolutely "right on" and I too am amazed that $199 stands between this individual and the opportunty to meet with, learn from, and exchange ideas with his/hers brightest and most progressive peers in the industry.

Hey Elliot,

Sure, folks need water and will drink bottled water, but can't folks start being more responsible about it? Have you seen the waste problems we have from the plastic containers? If people throw a party, can't they provide glasses and encourage guests to fill them up with filtered or tap water? Believe it or not, frequently the bottled water is actually poorer quality than what someone can get from tap or filter at home. I'm helping to rollout a waste-free beverage concept that I would like to believe will help change customer behavior over the longer term. This video explains the concept: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8vAIx9Mqdc.

Food and drinks are not the cause of childhood obesity, it is the lack of exercise at home and in the schools. Since all the vending related people are taking a lot of the heat for this why not place some blame elsewhere like X-box, playstation, etc. The people that make these games have sucked our kids on to the couch for years now and they just keep making tons of money. What about the fact that we have been able to have pizza or pizza's, loaded with fat by the way, delivered right to your couch practically. Life is about making choices, our kids have been making the wrong ones over the years because the parenting has been LAZY. My kids play video games and eat poptarts and chips but they exercise EVERYDAY right along with me. Parents, teachers, set an example and EXERCISE.

Elliot, I believe that you hit the nail right on the head. Locations do want to purchase quality food items from designated food vending machines. The problem lies in that the quality of the food purchased through vend channels is somewhat lacking versus the made to order food at local convenience stores and restaurants. The pricing is also a key issue. To be able to compete quality food has to be resonably resourced at point of purchase to make resale profitable. Very few and far between are the commissaries producing vend sandwiches on a local level. I feel that a location does not have to have one hundred plus employees to warrant a food vending machine. They just have to eat the food items on a regular basis. With the availability of fully chilled spiral driven combo machines, food can be plugged in anywhere. Operators must use a little creativity and customer knowledge and feedback to thrive in the smaller accounts by offering cold food in these environments. Most food items can produce one dollar plus profits per turn. Hard to do that on a can of pop or a bag of chips.
