Interior Truck Layout: DIY Versus Hiring A Specialist
Vehicle customization is necessary, but the right configuration can increase efficiency, save money and leave room for growth.
Cost realities: do-it-yourself versus professional installation
Automatic Merchandiser offers a comparison for operators debating the cost savings of building shelves themselves versus the convenience of industry-specific kits or installation. For purpose of illustration, this vending truck has a box measuring 55 inches wide, 84 inches high and 139 inches long. Shelving units will be built to be the length of each side.
Mileage reimbursement (gas, wear and tear: $.50 per mile) 60 miles round trip to home improvement store $30
Mechanic or service technician wage ($15 per hour**) 90 minutes to home improvement store and back
(traffic, finding materials, checkout, etc.) $22.50
Shelving DIY Grand Total
$420 to $950 for 80 feet of shelving (to hold soda and snacks)
Note the weight of the wood will limit how much product can be hauled. Also, there is a weight capacity for metal storage shelves. They must be heavy duty.

The leading manufacturer quotes (which should be considered estimates) for a similar system, many of which hold more than the DIY shelves and use up substantially less gross vehicle weight, are:
Hackney Kits: For a box that size, weight needs to be considered; so two drink racks (96-case capacity) and 85 feet of snack shelves, would be around $2,800. For a more typical, larger interior, with four drink racks and 841 feet of shelving, it would be closer to $3,200. No cooler is included.
Installed: Add $800, plus cost of getting vehicle to the plant.
A comparable Omnivan would be 144 inches long, 84 inches wide and 42 inches tall and would cost $13,000 with no cooler to $16,000 with a cooler.
Kits: The interior would run $2,500-$3,000 without a cooler. An omnicube cooler would be an additional $2,800-$3,000.
SpecialtyTrux Kits: From $300-$500
Installed: Refurbished model with shelving and beverage rack, money safe, new paint job, but no cooler, would be around $1,500
